ELD Logging with Annotations/notes section for 'weird situations' can assist drivers, says F

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Office of Enforcement and Compliance Director Joe DeLorenzo made a key point when presenting multiple situations where exemption from an agency's electronic logging device comes into question. He commented that when a question about an exemption arises such as with personal conveyance, annotating the logs with notes about particular changes can be key for drivers when ELDs are concerned.

In “any weird situation,” he said, “annotate it in the driver’s record [so the situation] would be clear if somebody asked you for it.”

Depending on what the situation is, it may not avoid a violation, but a clear record will make the roadside process proceed with least friction — and give drivers/carriers the best chance of defending themselves in the case of audits/future inspections.
